Carré Care 101: How to Keep Your Scarf Looking New

A carré is meant to last through more wears than most things in your closet. A little care keeps it that way.

Washing

Hand wash in cold water, or take it to a dry cleaner. Skip the washing machine — even on delicate cycles, agitation is harder on the print and the weave than a five-minute hand wash.

Drying

Never tumble dry. Lay flat on a towel, away from direct sun, and let it air dry. Direct heat is the fastest way to dull a print or warp the fabric's drape.

Ironing

If it needs it, iron on low heat and avoid direct contact with the printed side — iron over a thin cloth, or from the back.

Storage

Fold or roll it loosely rather than hanging it for long stretches; hanging can stretch the fabric at the point of contact. Rolling also avoids the sharp crease lines that folding can leave over time.

Treat it well and a carré earns its place — not because it was handed down, but because you kept it up.
